Welcome to the conference
"Change and Sustainability in the Baltic Sea Area"

20 to 21 of November 2006 at Södertörn University College, with ‘keynote’ presentations as well as plenary discussions, combined with parallel workshops.
The conference aims to highlight and discuss important processes of change in the Baltic Sea area and to discuss how these processes relate to societal, political and ecological sustainability. Special focus will be on assessing potentials of developing an interdisciplinary framework to study change in social-ecological systems.
Changes in socio-ecological systems are typically complex, multidimensional and intrinsically unpredictable. Therefore, understanding change requires an interdisciplinary approach, as well as collaboration between scientists, public authorities and stakeholders. Current concerns in the Baltic Sea area include environmental issues such as air and water pollution, loss of biodiversity and climate change, as well as regional sustainability and coordination of various national strategies. The multi-disciplinary nature of understanding and meeting these challenges is reflected in the conference, which welcomes contributions from natural and social science as well as from the humanities.
The conference is organised by The Centre for Baltic and East European and Studies (CBEES). Research leader Michael Gilek (michael.gilek@sh.se) is responsible for this event.
